Aura Sound Engine
Procedural, 3D-spatial Web Audio. Feature-complete engine, ready for integration.
What it is
Aura is a procedural, 3D-spatial Web Audio sound studio built for InertSpace room-OS sites. Sounds are placed in space, not just faded in and out. Ambient loops emerge from generative layers instead of pre-recorded MP3s. Runs entirely in the browser, no plugins, no external service.
Why it matters
A Room-OS metaphor collapses without spatial audio. If the record shop's turntable sounds the same volume whether you are standing at the counter or across the room, the room isn't a room, it is a poster. Aura is what makes the metaphor actually work.
It is also the reusable audio engine for anything else in the constellation that wants to sound like a place: a TentCities Site that wants ambient audio, an installation, a future community server's welcome scene.
Current state
Where it is right now: the engine itself is feature-complete for its current scope. It's its own project now, separated from the AnalogCircus tree it grew up in. A full internal code review was completed mid-July.
What it is not yet: wired into a public site. The room-OS is where Aura is designed to land, but the actual wiring hasn't happened yet.
What is next: the first real consumer. Either wire Aura into the AnalogCirc.us Navigator (which is where the design was aimed from the start), or ship a standalone demo scene so other InertSpace things can adopt it without needing to read source.
Connections
Designed for the same room-OS pattern that AnalogCirc.us runs on, and would compose naturally into a TentCities Site wanting spatial audio. Standalone repo, so any project can pull it in without hauling in the whole InertSpace stack.
Build log
A quiet build. Feature-complete for its scope, waiting for its first real consumer.

Early phase
The sound-playground years
Long stretch of tinkering: synthesized sound sources placed in space, generative ambient layers, no pre-recorded audio anywhere. A lot of throwaway sketches before the shape of a real engine came into view.
More
- Everything is synthesized. No MP3s, no WAVs, no CDN of audio files that has to load before anything sounds like anything.
- Sources have real positions in space. The record shop's turntable is quieter when you're across the room.
- Ambient layers are generative: the room evolves, it doesn't loop.
- Multiple false starts on the engine shape before the current one stabilized. What shipped is what survived being rewritten several times.

Spring 2026
Documented and called feature-complete
The engine hits a point where the scope it was reaching for is done. Docs written down. From here the question is not "does it work" but "where does it plug in first."

Extracted into its own project Extracted
The engine leaves the AnalogCircus tree and becomes its own thing, so it can be reused without hauling the whole surrounding codebase.

Full internal code review
A pass through the whole engine to name what's solid, what's rough, and where the first integration should land. Room-OS is the answer.
More
- Solid: the core, the presets, the studio surface. The synthesis pipeline is honest.
- Rough: the ergonomics of standing up a new scene from scratch. The "here's how you use this" story needs to catch up to the "here's what it does" story.
- The verdict on first integration: the room-OS is the target. Everything about the design was aimed at that shape from the beginning.

Standalone, ready for a consumer
Engine works, docs exist, own repo. No public consumer wired in yet.
Unchanged in six weeks, and recorded as unchanged rather than quietly refreshed to look busy. The room-OS Aura was aimed at spent the summer on its shop and on mobile, so the first consumer has not arrived. The engine itself is not waiting on any work of its own.

First real consumer
Wire Aura into the AnalogCirc.us Navigator (the original target), or ship a standalone demo scene so other InertSpace things can adopt it.
